Blogs and Kisses

The tangles continue. Things have gotten so weird upstairs that tonight I shut off all the lights, turned off the TV and am listening to Nancy Wilson and Mozart (not at the same time). Meanwhile, my youngest son is hooting loudly at his video game pals in his room; whilst the elder boy is apparently camping at his mysterious girlfriend’s house for the week. Came home to discover our backyard has been completely redone without my knowledge – apparently my wife has made arrangements? Wonder what that will cost us. Looks great I admit, but all of the changes have been unsettling. I believe 13 trees have been taken down over the last year, a new driveway and siding – and the neighbors maybe are beginning not to hate us as much. One suggested that this has been quite the improvement over the “thicket” we used to have for a yard. I admit it was a bit wild and unruly, but I sort of miss it and feel naked without the cover of our personal forest. Of course, some of the trees were sick and needed to go, but still feel a tad guilty over it anyway.
Was watching a Six Feet Under DVD set I picked up cheap the other day and realized that I had seen the first two episodes already. Is my mind that far gone that I don’t remember. I vaguely recall trying to get the wife interested, but I didn’t think I had been successful. I can only imagine with terror how much worse my memory could get.
Had a close call last week, well as close as I get, with the Hollywood folk as they loved my pitch for a Crystal Falls feature film, but… and there is always a but in my life, isn’t there? The gave me high marks and thought it was great idea but felt it was too dark to be sold in these difficult times (they may be looking for another Glee?) and were bewildered by the ghost’s appearance in a crime drama. (I could probably write an entire blog just on this subject, but my wife just called from San Francisco, where she is working this week, and now I don’t have time). My other pitch responses (all from women) were less enthusiastic – this seems to be a trend as the women I have pitched have all been “confused.” I did finish the first draft of my vampire Western “Dread Noon” (good thing – since I have already started pitching it) but have not had the energy to get back at it. Plus my elbow has been giving me trouble (tendonitis) – so figured I would take a short break. Also need to videotape myself for a documentary I am supposed to appear in – was hoping to get that done last week, but… almost got it together tonight, but didn’t quite get there.

Work has been misery as usual, but at least a couple good things happened this week – for one, some of the new people discovered my books and expressed interest in them, which was nice (and unusual amongst millennials) – and a woman who loved my first two books pulled me aside and told me she loved Bone Lake. She may be the only one who has actually read it, but it was nice to hear nonetheless.
Well, I must go now. The battle against the black dog must be waged at all costs. Hope you all keep the miserable cur at bay as well. Love to you all.

Loon on the Lake

Wonderful weekend of low key fun. The wife and I discovered a new trail that was quite nice and we got to spend a lot of time together, I also got quite a bit of research in on the new project, and this afternoon, I managed to drag my kayak down to the little lake across the street from us and go for a spin. I may have mentioned before that I tore one of the tendons off the bone on my right arm last year, right about the same time that my wife sold my canoe. She bought me a new smaller one man unit, but my shoulder just did not feel up to the task until recently. It is buy cheap cialis icks.org one of the fastest working medicines that relax blood vessels and pumps up more blood into the organ. So, sildenafil 25mg and viagrae of same genre. One of my sons took it out last year and hated it, but the weather was perfect today so I decided to try it out and… ended up traversing the entire pond 7-8 times. The best part was kicking back and catching some rays while floating out in the middle, but saw several turtles and a couple loons must have nested down at the far end. The peace and quiet was really quite fantastic and reminded me that you don’t need all the bells and whistles and fireworks for fun.

Sally’s Tomato

Well well… another week of the grind has ended and my weekend is pretty well booked, but… my better half was invited to play Bunko tonight with the girls, and so I decided I’d better put in some serious work on my new project. Not that the last one is selling like hotcakes or receiving rave reviews, or any reviews for that matter — come on people! But despite the tiredness of my eyes, I managed to put in a considerable amount of research while listening to some wonderful classical music and a Dave Brubeck album in which he plays Stephen Foster tunes!?!? Love Jazz of course, and strangely have a soft spot for those old-timely Southern songs –probably because my parents bought us a cheesy little organ when we were kids and we had a book of Stephen Foster songs that were among the first songs I learned to play. I still do a mean “Beautiful Dreamer” on the guitar. That is why; some of the persons call it cheap super cialis . So, don’t stress too viagra purchase on line much consult a doctor before taking the medication. Hence this is used in diseases arising due levitra canada prescription to vitiation of vata. (and check out my short story about Stephen Foster called “Dear Friends and Empty Hearts” in the short story section).
But the eyes have pretty much gone out on me, and it is going to take another two weeks or so of research before I can begin actual writing, so decided to kick back and finish the evening with a scotch and soda and listen to Oscar Peterson’s “Motions and Emotions.” Arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman, it starts off with a Henry Mancini Bossa Nova called “Sally’s Tomato” and features versions of songs by Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach, the Beatles, Jobim and even “Ode to Billy Joe.” A true delight.
So why am I telling you all this? Lord only knows. I suspect the only people who will read or care are those wanting to sell me a way to improve traffic. Save your breath, you traffic traffickers, this guy’s not in love with you and has no money to spare anyway. Meanwhile, this is some tasty tomato—think I’ll leave you now and let Jobim’s wave ripple over me as I lull myself to sleep.

Go Go Blogzilla

All three of my books (and the Spanish version of The Courier) are now safely on sale at Amazon in paperback and Kindle versions, and they are now also available at Barnes and Noble online, although the paperback versions may take a couple more days to appear on their website. I’ve sent out notices and… the response has been nice, but underwhelming, and… it’s a damn shame, because all three books are well worth a read.
Maybe, I should lower the price and basically give them away? No, because the people looking for free literature is not the audience I want to reach anyway. The readers of the standard trade stuff and best sellers who are looking for bland easy reads that settle gently over them a comforting blankie would probably be confused and upset by my stories. After all, there are occasional big words, gritty and dark bits featuring drug use and violence, and twisty plots require an investment of time and mental focus, for which the reward is commiserate. I want people who value words and writing and who are willing to invest to read something worth reading. Looking for flying robots or teenaged vampires in love? You are in the wrong place here.
So anyway, how to market? Forcing myself to keep writing a blog that seems to exist in a vacuum is one way, I suppose.
So, hey I guess I’ll give my followers a snapshot of my life. Took the day off yesterday and drove with my wife to Milwaukee. Spent the morning “antiquing” – she found a chest of drawers and a necklace; I found a couple books and some vinyl records. One of the books is a mammoth book called The Complete Work of Michelangelo and is pretty awesome. Filled with black and white studies of the sculptures and color plates of things like the panels of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, it weighs a ton. Although the cover is torn and there is some slight water damage to a handful of pages, the thing is in remarkable shape. I got it for $5.00. Is this the fate of all artists, I wonder? To be forgotten and undervalued in turn.
(I have been hearing those famous lines from Eliot’s The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock – “In the room the women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo.” and wishing I had someone who would understand the reference if I said it out loud.)
Had a nice lunch with my son, who is about to graduate from college, at the Rumpus Room – although he was quite hungover from his senior year celebrating. The wife and I then toured the botanical gardens in the Mitchell Park Domes, before heading to the casino. I may perhaps include some photos at a later date.

Now, I am not a fan of these smoke-filled money pits, and I never have any success at the slots, and yesterday was no exception. The wife won about $90, which she immediately lost; I was never ahead. Although I know the odds are better at the table games, my severe shyness impels me to watch, but never engage. The buffet was well stocked, but we ate way, way too much. Gluttony and Greed satiated, what deadly sin would we partake of next?
Fortunately, we were there to see a concert – and it turned out to be a goodie! Ian Hunter was appearing at the Northern Lights Theater and the show was pretty awesome. A very nice venue, and Ian – an old favorite of mine since the Mott the Hoopla days did not disappoint. He and his crack Rant Band rolled out plenty of his solos hits like “All American Alien Boy,” “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” and the new single about David Bowie, “Dandy,” as well as Mott favorites like “All the Way From Memphis,” “I Wish I Was Your Mother,” and of course, “All the Young Dudes.”
Unfortunately, there were only old dudes in the audience as there were only two people I saw (both adult children dragged in by their folks) who were younger than 55. Pretty sad to see because, Ian really rocked out – looking extremely young and spry for a 70-something-year-old, and he is singing better than ever.
So the disappointment of seeing the hero of my youth performing to a crowd of geezers was somewhat heartened by the fact that Ian looked and sounded so good – so maybe there is hope still for a geezer such as myself.
I wish every day could be as fun as yesterday was, but it simply cannot be, and I am back to the daily grind of boring, stressful work and overwhelming family obligations, as well as the nerve -wracking experience of pitching my screenplays. The only thing keeping me going is the knowledge that I am about to start a new project – a screenplay (possible novel as well) that I think may have more “commercial” potential, without being a lame sellout.
I hope you’ll tune in again and stay with me as I follow my lonely path. Until next time… Keep on rocking me baby!

Coup Coup

Been really struggling with events these days with the Nazis storming back into power and threatening the world with war and global annihilation. Makes me think my crappy little books about people and small towns seem pretty damn unimportant. Feel like I should be marching and writing manifestos, but after working all day (my being one of the lucky few at my age still employed), I don’t find much energy to write, let alone fight the power.

Maybe once I finish up the new book? Bone Lake, the sequel to Crystal Falls has been teetering on the edge of being ready for a few days now. The text is finished, although I need to give it one final read through, and the cover art is ready and stupendous. Purchased my ISBN and will be uploading very soon. My publisher for Crystal Falls also recently went under, down under (they are Australian) unfortunately —- so I will be republishing the novel with typos corrected and new cover art. I can sense the excitement in the atmosphere — NOT — but I am excited about it.

So again, most of my free time is taken up with my Art, and I feel like I am selfishly pursuing my own ends at the expense of not stopping the Evil Ones — like Dancing to Nero, so to speak.

I’m sure there must be many of us out there, artists, writers, etc… who feel the same way. Drop a line sometime, I’d love to commiserate being a producing artist in a time of great struggle.

Tweets for Twitters

Pulled up from a fitful and unpleasant slumber this morn (pre-alarm mind you) by a plethora of birds twittering in counterpoint outside my window in a concert that would have drowned out the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Resisting the urge to pull out a shotgun, I proceeded through the usual coffee, bagels and more bad news routine, before descending to my place in Hades for another round of the game of Let’s Waste Our Life, the one without any hope that the Grand Prize would be discovered behind Door #3. Checked the lottery and determined that for the seven-millionth time in a row, I am inexplicably not the winner again. What gives with that?

The only beacon in this day of fog and grey is the fact that I managed to finally complete a full-fledged synopsis of Crystal Falls. I hear the snickering, but just you try to condense 365 pages of amazingly intricate plots and subplots into a two-page blurb. Not so easy is it. OK, it really was only a synopsis of the 135 screenplay, but you get my drift. And, although it is a first draft and needs tweaking, by golly it even made ME want to read the book/ see the movie, and I’ve read it too many times to mention, so I guess it works. And it is yet another component necessary to begin the submission process. Will hopefully start within the next month to contact some professionals to get the ball rolling. Stay tuned for more developments in that arena.

My buddy John, over in Romania, called Crystal Falls “a book with both action and heart” and that is high praise indeed from a person with his impeccable taste. Reverend Ken read the book while in Honduras and reports that he thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and can’t wait for the movie. Even Jeff T. reports that he “couldn’t put it down, with a shotgun.” With strong endorsements from people like that, how can you not pick up a copy today? Especially since after the movie comes out, the price goes up (just kidding). But if you buy now, you do get the opportunity to look smart and smug at parties and say sneeringly “Oh yes, I read that book ages ago,” when the conversation turns to great movies.
